Christmas

So..Christmas.

This is a holiday celebrated by many Christians and non-Christians in the entire world. according to research, about 95% of Americans celebrate Christmas.

Family and friends gather, exchange gifts and enjoy each others company and good food. its a time for forgiveness and peace...unity and love- Its a holiday that should be celebrated and enjoyed to the fullest by anyone who wishes to, and that's not the case.
We imagine a day like this being an emotionally testing time for a person without a home, more so than the other days. wouldn't it be for you?
wouldn't you be thinking of your life?  of laughing or even arguing (who doesn't!) WITH family and friends? past Christmases where things may have been better?
or just sharing a meal and enjoying the company of another person..
In Florida the number of homeless people is  roughly at 85 000...

• 40% of all homeless people are families
• 60% are single adults
• 8% are elderly persons over 62 years of age
• 23% are children age 18 or younger

There are many things that can lead to being homeless but what we know for sure is that no one chooses this. no one.

Christmas speaks of giving and sharing. So we ask you to give and share as a part of Project ABEL when we go out for a run to share with our brothers and sisters out there who need us. what is project abel? please check out this link http://projectabel.blogspot.com/2011/11/what-is-project-abel.html

as well as this link http://projectabel.blogspot.com/2011/11/first-mission-thanksgiving.html

24 Dec is the date, 12:00pm-1:30 pm   THEN from 1:30pm until......(well.. till we all gotta go!) if you are free and are able to, Project Abel members will be heading to a restaurant  for food and drinks ourselves so we can cool off afterwards, swap some stories and thoughts..a little reasoning (We like that word...'reasoning'.)

and this is an original Project Abel run so we wont be collaborating with an organisation for this run.
so that means we all cook and package the food at our own homes before meeting up.

First Mission-Thanksgiving

The 'Good Samaritan Law'
I wanted to start of by writing about this Law that protects you when doing these kind of things. No one should be discouraged to partake in fear of prosecution.
On October 1, 1996, President Clinton signed the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act to encourage the donation of food and grocery products to non-profit organizations for distribution to needy individuals. This new law makes it easier to donate. Here's how:

  • It protects donors from liability when donating to a non-profit organization.
  • It protects donors from civil and criminal liability should the product donated in good faith later cause harm to the needy recipient.
  • It standardizes donor liability exposure. Donors and their legal counsel no longer have to investigate liability laws in 50 states.
  • It sets a liability floor of "gross negligence" or intentional misconduct for persons who donate grocery products. (See Act text for further definitions.)
  • Congress recognized that the provision of food close to recommended date of sale is, in and of itself, not grounds for finding gross negligence. For example, cereal can be donated if it is marked close to code date for retail sale

First Mission Thanksgiving in cooperation with Life Net for Famillies http://www.lifenet4families.org/. We will be cooking our groceries in their kitchen and will meet there at 8.30am. after helping them serve in their kitchen from 9-11am, we cook our own groceries in their kitchen package it and drive our to our designated areas to distribute the food we have cooked.
We should be done by 1pm at the latest:)

What is Project Abel

                                 Dear friend

My name is Hailee Araya. I'm reaching out to you for help on a mission I’ve been planning for many years.  A project I’ve named Abel.

This letter is Project Abels mission statement about what this is about and how we can inexpensively assist the less fortunate as a community right this moment.  I don’t  have the funds necessary to be a philanthropist, but I remain passionate about assisting individuals who are suffering from poverty, starvation, and homelessness right here in New York. This project is designed to bring hope into the lives of the many who are disadvantaged, with the resources we have now.
Well, can you put together 10 dollars and go grocery shopping? Can you cook or do you know someone who can? Combined however you choose, 10 dollars can purchase any 3 items from the list below. :

Chicken Breast                        5lb Bag of Potatoes                 Fish
Beef, Bacon, or Pork               Cheese                                    Bread
Salami                                     turkey breast                            Eggs
Pasta                                       Rice                                         Oil, butter, salt + pepper
Vegetables (fresh, canned, or frozen)                                     biscuit or crackers
Juice                                        Milk                                         Fruit

We're inviting you to join us, and together we can make Project Abel a success.  The plan is that we cook everything at home, package it, and distribute the finished product to homeless people who don’t know where their next meal is coming is from. I do communicate regularly with shelters and soup kitchens that allow us to meet and cook in their kitchen for our missions in exchange for helping them serve their meals in the morning which in my opinion...just makes this mission even better.

That's what WE can do to put a dent into the despair that plagues so many families and individuals in our respective communities.

If you have a car please let us know, there are many areas that could really use this kind of help and therefore, everyone who is able to partake should so, just by providing transportation. It counts!

Do you have a vehicle and are you able to invest your time by picking up groceries? It would be highly appreciated by all beneficiaries. Project Abel is after all a mission to help our brothers and sisters make it through the extreme challenges of their daily hardships, using food.  Thank you!
